Struggling gay media company, PlanetOut Inc. — the parent company of Gay.com and PlanetOut.com -- has filed its most recent quarterly filing, reporting an accumulated deficit of nearly $100 million. Back in January, when GFN last reported on the San Francisco-based Web portal, the company had been evaluating "strategic alternatives," which included a possible sale of the company. For the first nine months of 2007, PlanetOut reported a loss of $33.1 million on revenues of $39.8 million. The company last July raised $26.2 million in equity financing from a group of investors. Then it sold its travel business, RSVP, to Atlantis Events Inc. for an undisclosed sum in October, a little more than a year after acquiring it. Most recently, the company reported an accumulated deficit of $99.8 million as of March 31. For that quarter, PlanetOut lost $10.4 million on sales of $4.8 million. The company also published magazines but agreed in April to sell that business to Regent Releasing, a unit of New York-based Here Networks, the gay television station, for $6 million. According to the San Francisco Business Times, CEO Karen Magee led the company since July 2006, and she's been a board member at the company since 2003, taking over from former CEO Lowell Selvin, who left for health reasons. The Business Times reports Magee's salary in 2007 was $390,000 and her bonus (which included some money for 2006) was $132,600, according to the company's proxy card. |
